Waves, Whitley Bay

Client: North Tyneside Council
The refurbishment of Whitley Bay Leisure Centre was tendered as a reasonable sized swimming pool refurbishment package, but rapidly grew in size and complexity.  Added to the initial package were instructions for uplifting existing tiling, new waterproof tanking, screeding and rendering as well as the tiling to a completely new health suite; swelling the overall package by an additional 60%. To add to it's complexity, the 5 months worth of work needed to be completed in 11 weeks and with all sorts of other trades under the same sort of pressure and competing for the same space on site. Obviously to achieve the completion date and maintain the quality of workmanship required, a great deal of co-operation and communication was needed between all parties involved.  This was achievable only with a large amount of determination and flexibility on the part of our fixers.  With a very willing and helpful main contractor, our 19 man site team, under the direction of Contracts Director Steve Allsopp and supervision of team leader Mark McNally, were able to produce a top notch finish for the client under very difficult circumstances.
The pool itself was tiled with over 900M² of ungalzed porcelain mosaic to the base, walls and new Aquatic Play area.  With an additional 1650M² of wall tiles and 1400M² of floor tiles to the pool surrounds, changing village and health suite, as well as over 1400M² of PCI Seccoral 2K tanking system, there was a substantial amount of work to be completed in 11 weeks.

Hexham Swimming Pool

Client: Sir Robert McAlpine
Designed by GLR Architects, the state of the art building houses the UK's first biomass heated swimming pool, with fuel coming from locally produced woodchips, as well as solar panels and various other environmentally aware design features. The main 25M six-lane competition-standard pool is flanked by two much smaller pools for use by adults with babies and toddlers.  There is also a separate "Studio" pool, 15M long, which has an adjustable floor like the competition pool, but also boasts the UK's first hydraulically adjustable pool steps and a higher water temperature for easier use by people with all levels of disability.  The building also houses an extensivley tiled changing village to cater not only for the swimmers and gym users, but also for the runners using the adjacent athletics track. The project has not been an easy one, however by working closely with the main contractors Sir Robert McAlpine and the designers GLR, we have produced a high quality finish to the complete satisfaction of the client and their partnership organisations.  Tynedale Council's Chief Executive Richard Robson was delighted with the quality of work and said "This is the kind of project that councils should be all about". Speaking about the eco friendly facility, Frances Rowe, Rural and Environment Manager at OneNorthEast said "The new Hexham Pool will be a great demonstration of how renewable energy can work in sport, leisure and the community"

Freemans Place Swimming Pool, Durham

Client: Morgan Ashurst
The new leisure centre, Freeman's Quay, in Durham City, is a £12.5M project boasting an eight lane 25M competition-standard swimming pool, a learner pool, cafe and an extensive changing village, all tiled by P Plunkett Tiling, as well as a sports hall, dance studio and large health and fitness suite. The flagship property was designed by Andrew Bottomley of William Saunders Partnership, and built by Morgan Ashurst, to replace the existing pool at Old Elvet, Durham.  Speaking at the handover ceremony, Frayser Reynolds, leader of Durham City Council, praised the standard of workmanship by Plunkett's, and various other attendees added their own compliments. The photographs show that this project is another successful example of our expertise in the pool tiling and leisure centre market.  From the precision and attention to detail of the competition standard pool to the elegance of the Indian Stone cafe floor, P Plunkett Tiling Contractors have stamped our trademark for quailty in every aspect of this prestigious community facility.

Sunderland Aquatic Centre

Client: Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd
The works are generally considered to be of a high standard and praise has been passed on to the tiling squad by the main contractor, the architect and several visitors to the site. The Changing Village tiling was a a large proportion of our works, with almost as much tiling as there is in the pool hall; a range of bright colours and formats were used to produce a very vibrant appearance to this area. Of course the focal point of the project is the Pool Hall and the 50M pool itself.  The vibrant colour theme is followed through into this area, with blocks of bold colour making a statement in the vast arena.  The main pool itself however is what the project is all about; the 50M, ten lane, pool has been built to incredible precision to achieve timekeeping accuracy that will allow County, National and hopefully International competition to be staged there.  Who knows, one day this pool could be the venue for a World Record swim. With an adjustable boom to alter the length of the main pool, an hydraulic floor to adjust the depth and lane markings across the 25M width aswell as the 50M length, the pool itself is very versatile and should become a valuable asset to the local community.  The hard work and no little measure of skill that has been put into this project by our skilled craftsmen, should serve the to make this swimming pool a benchmark for quality for all to see and enjoy.
