Company Profile

One of the leading ceramic tiling contractors in the industry with an outstanding reputation for quality of work and dependability

The company, which was established in 1975 in the North East, has grown over the years and now has a nationwide commitment undertaking contracts throughout Great Britain for all the major contractors and numerous prestigious clients.

We are one of the leading specialist tiling contractors in the industry with an outstanding reputation for quality of work and dependability. In February 1992 we became the first tiling contractor to achieve BS5750 Part 2 Certification for Quality Assurance and have maintained and improved the standards ever since, our current standard being ISO 9001:2008.

Following our success in achieving Total Quality Management we turned our attention to enhancing the capabilities of our workforce through a structured training programme. We embarked on a series of initiatives to provide the facilities and support required to ensure that anyone in the company could access training specific to their particular needs.

In 1996 we started a modern apprenticeship scheme under the guidance of the CITB. This continues to run and has been a resounding success with apprentices enjoying specialist training to ensure that the company has a skilled workforce for the future; two UK National Skillbuild Champions bear testimony to that success. Our commitment to the ongoing development of our staff is reflected in the recent re-awarding of our Investor in People status which we first achieved in 1997.

The company has always taken our impact on the environment seriously and has for many years employed business practices and methods of working that sought to minimise our carbon footprint.  More recently we chose to formalise our procedures and Environmental Management System and this culminated in June 2013 with our certification for ISO 14001:2004.  Using this standard, we shall continue to strive to improve our environmental awareness, strengthen the ethos of the company and monitor our progress in running our business in a responsible and sustainable manner, encouraging suppliers and clients alike to improve with us.

Our philosophy is simply to be the best; we know this to be the only way forward.

Personnel

The strength of the company is derived from our employees

Much of the strength of the company is derived from our employees; it is the expertise of our craftsmen and management alike at Plunkett’s that keeps us one step ahead of our competitors.

We have a policy of re-investment and resourcing in the company that ensures that all our employees are continually assessed, trained and re-trained to maintain the high standards that our customers have come to expect.

In recognition of the company’s commitment to training and the resources we provide to develop and maintain the training program in practice, the company has been reawarded the prestigious Investors in People standard.

The labour force consists of time-served craftsmen, a number of whom have been with the company since its formation. All have benefited from continuous development of their skills and product knowledge through training courses run both in-house and with the involvement of outside agencies, major product manufacturers and local educational establishments.

We have a successful modern apprenticeship scheme and a growing number of the workforce have been trained and educated in the methods and standards of the company since the beginning of their careers.

Training is not restricted to our craftsmen of course, and all our management and administrative staff have their own personal development plan tailored to their own particular skills and requirements.

We have a dedicated training manager who ensures that all employees are continuously progressing both in their professional growth and personal fulfilment. All our operational employees now hold CSCS cards.

Our training programme encompasses basic craftsmanship and new product awareness as well as personal development and health and safety on site. Health and Safety awareness and the use of personal protective equipment are of paramount importance in our training programme and much emphasis is put on these elements.  This pro-active approach is reflected in our very low accident rate and our continuous high scoring on clients’ safety audits.

The Investors in People Award has provided benefits for the company, its employees and, most importantly, for all our clients.

Premises

An ultra-modern unit comprises over 1600m2 warehouse space and 500m2 of air-conditioned office facilities

The company has been based at its current premises, a purpose-built factory in Prudhoe, Northumberland, since 1991.

The site is ideally situated here on the A695, the main Newcastle-Carlisle route south of the Tyne and so has easy access to all major routes both North/South and East/West.

Specifically designed to suit the needs of the company, the ultra-modern unit comprises over 1600m2 warehouse space and 500m2 of air-conditioned office facilities.

A third of the warehouse is dedicated to precision cutting, using specially imported machines that allow us an unrivalled ability to cut ceramics, terrazzo, granite, limestone and other natural stone, to suit the detailing needs of our clients.

A further section of the warehouse is set up as an in-house training area, in accordance with our Investors in People training programme.

The offices are equipped with a fully integrated network computer system using the most up-to-date software packages specifically designed and tailored to manage all aspects of our business.  High speed fibre broadband internet and full A0 size printing facilities ensure that we keep pace with the cutting edge of procurement methods and data communication.

The utilisation of the very latest technology ensures that our clients receive the high standard of performance that our company promises and our quality assurance system demands.
