Whitley Bay

The refurbishment of Whitley Bay Leisure Centre was tendered as a reasonable sized swimming pool refurbishment package, but rapidly grew in size and complexity.  Added to the initial package were instructions for uplifting existing tiling, new waterproof tanking, screeding and rendering, as well as the tiling to a completely new health suite; swelling the overall package by an additional 60%. To add to it’s complexity, the 5 months worth of work needed to be completed in 11 weeks and with all sorts of other trades under the same sort of pressure and competing for the same space on site. Obviously to achieve the completion date and maintain the quality of workmanship required, a great deal of co-operation and communication was needed between all parties involved.  This was achievable only with a large amount of determination and flexibility on the part of our fixers.  With a very willing and helpful main contractor, our 19 man site team, under the direction of Contracts Director Steve Allsopp and supervision of team leader Mark McNally, were able to produce a top notch finish for the client under very difficult circumstances.
The pool itself was tiled with over 900M² of ungalzed porcelain mosaic to the base, walls and new Aquatic Play area.  With an additional 1650M² of wall tiles and 1400M² of floor tiles to the pool surrounds, changing village and health suite, as well as over 1400M² of PCI Seccoral 2K tanking system, there was a substantial amount of work to be completed in 11 weeks.
