Intu Metro Centre
Client: Sir Robert McAlpineProject Date: Spring 2009
Spring 2009 saw the completion of one of Plunkett’s largest, most successful and most widely known and used projects. Five years after the commencement of floor tiling to the Metro Centre’s New Red Mall, the last phase of the floor finish renewal was handed over in March this year. First tendered for in April 2001, the various phases of work have finally come to an end.
The works comprised of 900x450mm Jura limestone slabs laid on a sand cement screed, incorporating structural and intermediate movement joints, staircases, anti-slip treatment to ramps and stone sealing on completion.
Works started on a dayshift basis back in January 2004 tiling the new 3300M² extension to the Metro Centre on the site of an old ASDA Store. This quickly extended through to incorporate the re-modelled atrium and existing Red Mall, adding another 3000M² to the works, but this time carried on out of hours.
By Spring 2005 we were starting the 12,500M² of the Grey and Green malls, the relationships built up between our site team and the Sir Robert McAlpine site team helping to secure the works for us.
2006 saw the Blue and Yellow malls started. This 9000M² phase however was a lot more problematic, with issues about severe slab movement and large adjoining level discrepencies to be overcome, particularly around the escalator bases and Town Square 2.
A further small phase of the Yellow mall was undertaken before, in September 2008, the final 5000M² phase was commenced.
Our record on the 33,000M² project has been exemplary, giving the main contractor excellent service and the client a finish that they and ourselves can be proud of.
