Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Newcastle

Client: Sir Robert McAlpine
Project Date: 2010

Three major development projects have been undertaken in recent years to ensure that Eldon Square continues to offer modern retail space.  On each phase Plunkett Tiling worked closely with Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd to screed and then supply and lay new Domus porcelain floor tiling to the malls.

Phase 1

Reconstruction work began in June 2005 to convert the former bus station into a new lower mall, which houses Argos and Waitrose as anchor tenants. The new Eldon Square Bus Station opened on 18 March 2007 between John Lewis and Haymarket bus station. It features a series of glass screens designed by the artist, Dan Savage.

Phase 2

The former Green Market was closed and demolished to make way for St Andrews Way, a new mall including several new retail outlets, with Debenhams department store as the anchor tenant. The New Green Market at High Friars opened in March 2007, with its entrance from Nelson Street and upstairs from the Grey’s Monument and Monument metro station.

Phase 3

The third phase was the uplifting and removal of all the existing tiles and screed and the replacement with new to modernise and brighten the existing malls, without affecting trade during the day.  The vast majority of the works were therefore undertaken out of hours, the works for this phase extending to an area of around 4000m2.
